Karen Karbo is the author of three novels, all of which were named New York Times Notable Books; four works of non-fiction—including How to Hepburn, which the Philadelphia Inquirer called “an exuberant celebration of a great original,” and The Stuff of Life, a People Magazine Critic’s Choice—and three books for young adults. Her essays, articles, and reviews have appeared in the New York Times, Outside, Elle, Vogue, More, and Salon.com. She lives in Portland, Oregon, where she is still hunting for a piece of vintage Chanel couture.
Chesley McLaren, known as “The French Illustrator in New York” for her Francophile style, has also worked as a Fifth Avenue fashion designer. She is the author/illustrator of several books, and her work has appeared in Town & Country, Vogue, In Style, and Elle. She lives in New York.
The Chanel-inspired jacket
I love jackets.
For more years than I can count jackets have been my all-purpose go-to clothing item to dress up anything.
In particular I love vintage jackets and men’s jackets. Before writing this book I never thought much about owning a Chanel jacket. I never coveted one.
But a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. The more I researched, the more I poured over the stupendous collections of Mademoiselle, as she was called, the more I wanted one. But we live in difficult times, and good Chanel jacket, even a vintage one, can set you back a few grand, easy.
I searched for my perfect jacket in LA, New York, Paris and of course, e-Bay, with no luck. Nothing I could afford I liked and nothing I liked was in my price range. Then one day it hit me – I could make my own, which is what Chanel herself would have done.
Stay tuned to see how this:

becomes something like this:

Karen is the author of the
Minerva Clark Series
of mysteries for middle grade readers. Conceived to entertain her fifth grade daughter, the series follows the adventures of seventh grade Minerva, a barely teenaged sleuth who’s been called “a cross between Adrian Monk and Nancy Drew.”
